Code.org and Harmon Sign an Alliance to Promote Computer Literacy in Spain

Harmon Corporate Affairs, Spain’s first consultancy specialising in non-market strategies, and Code.org, a non-profit organisation promoting computer literacy, have formed a strategic alliance to develop a campaign advocating for the inclusion of programming languages in Spain’s national curriculum—from early education through all academic stages.

Through this agreement, Harmon will support Code.org in developing communication, institutional relations, branding, and social mobilisation strategies aimed at strengthening the legitimacy and reach of this ambitious initiative. Both organisations share the conviction that it is essential for children and young people in Spain to learn programming and computational logic to face the challenges of the future—skills as fundamental as learning foreign languages.

The Code.org project has already achieved broad consensus in Spain, gaining the support of four former prime ministers: Felipe González, José María Aznar, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and Mariano Rajoy. In the business sector, it has received backing from José María Álvarez-Pallete (Chairman of Telefónica), Carlos Torres Vila (CEO of BBVA), José Bogas (CEO of Endesa), and senior executives from Gestamp, Red Eléctrica de España, Glovo, Cabify, and Coverwallet, among others. Institutions such as CEOE, Adigital, and the Princess of Girona Foundation, as well as media groups like Prisa, Vocento, Atresmedia, and Grupo Godó, have also expressed their support for the initiative’s development in Spain.

In 2021, the Code.org educational platform had 10,000 teachers and over 250,000 active students in Spain. Globally, more than 55 million students and 2 million educators have been trained through the platform, which has delivered over 1.1 billion hours of “Hour of Code” workshops worldwide.

The Importance of Computer Literacy

Despite programming being one of the most in-demand professions, in Spain 82% of parents and 76% of students are unaware of what programming languages are or what subjects they encompass, according to the report “Computer Science Education in Spain 2015.” In addition, 82% of teachers had never learned how to use technology as a teaching tool.

Elena Gorostiza, Director of Strategic Partnerships for EMEA at Code.org, emphasised that “the importance of our mission—which the great visionaries of our country have recognised—transcends ideologies because its impact is real, tangible, and essential for young people and for the future competitiveness of Spain. We must aspire to be a nation that creates technology.”

Carmen Basagoiti, President of Harmon, stated: “Society needs initiatives that are responsible and committed to transformation and long-term value creation. Code.org is a driving force for the future, and at Harmon, we want to help build that future. It’s a privilege for us tCarmen Basagoiti, President of Harmon, stated: “Society needs initiatives that are responsible and committed to transformation and long-term value creation.
